CHAPTER NINE

Dru had bribed Bellamy into boxing up a half-dozen of her biscuits and putting a bow on top, which he figured was the best present he could get Amber’s sister. He hoped it was enough of a thank you for the help she’d given him the day before in getting to go out with Amber.

He pulled into the curved driveway of the Miller home behind the Sutton’s suburban. He couldn’t help the wide grin on his face. Amber was going to be bowled over by the present he’d gotten up very early this morning to arrange. He was pretty sure he’d nailed it, totally. Being able to do things like this for his friends was definitely one of the bonuses of being rich. He took a moment to arrange everything before he got out of the car and hurried up the front porch. He held the giftbag for Amber carefully in both hands and the box of biscuits under his arm. Amber came to the door when he knocked, which would make this all the easier.

“Good morning.” She smiled up at him. “You missed them opening their presents from Ninja Santa, but there’s still plenty of pancakes left. Come in.” She took his arm and tugged on it. Dru couldn’t wait to hear about how Will had managed to fool his boys.

“Katie, this is for you. And I’d suggest hiding it from everyone else.” He held out the box of biscuits.

Katie’s eyes widened as she hurried forward for the box. She peeked inside and gave a gasp of glee. “Dru. Are you kidding me?”

Dru just laughed. and the giftbag he’d shifted to cradle in one hand gave a small yip. About that moment, the beagle puppy he’d driven down to Casper to pick up early that morning poked his head above the tissue paper Dru had lined the bag with before putting her inside.

Amber echoed her sister’s gasp, looking at Dru with furrowed eyebrows. “Dru, what is that?”

“Your Christmas present.” He held out the giftbag to her, his grin widening so much he thought it would slip past his cheeks.

“What?” Amber whispered and reached into the bag to pull the sweet little thing out. “You’re totally kidding.”

Dru stared at her, confused. She wasn’t excited or bouncing or smiling like he thought she would. Katie was definitely more excited about her simple gift, having already dug one biscuit out of the box and taking a furtive bite before stuffing it back in.

Amber’s lips had turned down into a frown, something he didn’t think possible while someone had a tiny beagle puppy nestled next to their face. But Amber was staring at him like he’d done something completely crazy. And maybe it had been a little much to drive three hours, round trip for a girl he’d just met—but he wanted to show her that the last couple days had really meant something to him. Something he intended to pursue beyond the twelve dates and ten days they had. He’d known that from their first dance the night of the Ranch House party.
